Energy storage is essential to a modern electric grid - it enables the grid to achieve ambitious renewable energy goals and enhances power system reliability and resilience. Energy storage is essential to a clean and modern electricity grid and is positioned to enable the ambitious goals for renewable energy and power system resilience. EPRI's Energy Storage & Distributed Generation team and its Member Advisors developed the Energy Storage Roadmap to guide EPRI's efforts in advancing safe, reliable, affordable, and clean energy storage. About EPRI's Energy Storage Roadmap

Energy storage is essential to a clean and modern electricity grid and is positioned to enable the ambitious goals for renewable energy and power system resilience. EPRI's Energy Storage & Distributed Generation team and its Member Advisors developed the Energy Storage Roadmap to guide EPRI's efforts in advancing safe, reliable, affordable, and clean energy storage. First established in 2020 and founded on EPRI's Mission of advancing safe, reliable, affordable, and clean energy for society...,the Energy Storage Roadmap envisioned a desired future for energy storage applications and industry practices in 2025 and identified the challenges in realizing that vision. The Energy Storage Roadmap was reviewed and updated in 2022 to refine the envisioned future states and provide more comprehensive assessments and descriptions of the progress needed (i.e., gaps) to achieve the desired 2025 vision.

SAFE, RELIABLE, AFFORDABLE, and CLEAN Energy Storage is essential to the future of the electric system for Everyone, Everywhere, All the Time.

In 2024, EPRI and its Member Advisors are re-VISION-ing the desired future of energy storage in 2030. Based on the feedback and suggestions of both EPRI Advisors and subject matter experts (SMEs), the Energy Storage Roadmap will be simplified to its core pillars of SAFE, RELIABLE, AFFORDABLE, and CLEAN. INNOVATION, which was a pillar in EPRI's Energy Storage Roadmap | Vision for 2025, is now embedded within each Roadmap pillar as a reflection of its role, operationally. At its core, INNOVATION drives energy storage advancement in SAFETY, RELIABILITY, AFFORDABILITY, and CLEAN life cycle deployment. As such, inclusion of equity and workforce development are critical to advancement, and therefore embedded within INNOVATION. Throughout the year, EPRI and its Member Advisors will assess the current state of energy storage within each pillar and reevaluate the gaps in industry knowledge and resources between now and the re-VISION-ed future for 2030.

Since its inception, the EPRI Energy Storage Roadmap was intended to guide the direction of EPRI's energy storage efforts to ensure delivery of relevant and impactful resources to its Members, the industry, and the public.
